Introducing Ansell's Chemical Protection

Protecting Your Colleagues from Chemical Hazards: What You Need to Know

Did you know:

1 Billion

Every year, 1 billion workers are exposed to harmful chemicals*

Every 30 Seconds

At least 1 worker dies every 30 seconds due to occupational chemical exposure (UN 2018)

Every day, your colleagues are exposed to a variety of hazards, such as corrosive liquids, toxic gases, flammable substances, and biological agents. Quality chemical protection for them is vital when dealing with those hazardous substances to safeguard their safety and also the work environment.

No matter the size of your operations, PPE is the frontline defence against any chemical exposure. This includes gloves, goggles, face shields, aprons and chemical-resistant clothing. The selection of PPE depends on the type if chemical and level of exposure.

However, inadequate protection could lead to accidents and health risks. Knowing the appropriate usage of body and hand protection keeps workdays safer and more productive.

That's why Ansell offers a comprehensive range of chemical-resistant PPE, including chemical protective clothing, gloves and accessories. Their products are extensively tested to meet the highest safety standards, providing optimal chemical resistance against hazardous chemicals and substances.

Looking for liquid-tight, spray-tight, or dust-tight protection? Ansell has the right solution for you. Their range of products are certified according to the European standards for chemical protective clothing, ranging from Type 3/4 to Type 5/6. Here is a brief overview of the different types of protection:

Type 3/4: Protection against pressurised liquid chemicals and liquid aerosols. Suitable for applications such as tank cleaning, chemical spraying, and spill response.

Type 3
EN 14605 Type 3

LIQUID-TIGHT PROTECTION

Suits which can protect against strong and directional jets of liquid chemicals.

Type 4
EN 14605 Type 4

SPRAY-TIGHT PROTECTION

Suits which offer protect against satuaration of liquid chemicals.

Type 5/6: Protection against airborne solid particulate chemicals and light spray and splashes. Suitable for applications such as asbestos removal, spray painting, and general clearing.

Type 5
EN ISO 13982-1 Type 5

DRY-PARTICULATE PROTECTION

Suits which provide protection to the full body agaainst airborne solid particulates.

Type 6
EN 13034 Type 6

REDUCED-SPRAY PROTECTION

Suits which offer limited protection against a light spray of liquid chemicals.

Understanding Seams Strengths and Technologies

Not all chemical protective clothing is equal. Ansell's products are designed with innovative seam technology and materials that ensure strong and resistant seams, preventing chemical leakage. Different seam technologies, such as stitched, bound, welded, or taped seams, are used based on the product type. Understanding seam types and strengths is crucial for assessing protection levels. Seam construction varies based on suit material and product performance requirements for certification standards. Below are details on the different seam types.

Stitched Seams
Stitched Seam

The simplest seam type is the stitched seam. It offers basic particulate and liquid protection that is typically associated with EN Type 5/6 certified products.

Bound Seams
Bound Seams

The bound seam uses separate binding materials which is stitched around the main suit fabric in a single process. This seam functions incredibly well as a particulate barrier known to provide better linting properties.

Stitched and Taped Seams
Stitched and Taped

The stitched and taped seam is stitched the same way but taped on the outside to offer increase strength and a barrier to liquid and particles.

Welded Seam
Welded Seams

Welded seam can be used if the suit material is weldable. It's a beneficial method as there is no thread needed. The suit material is sealed to itself or to a tape in the welding process. Welded seams are typically used for EN Type 3/4 certified products.

Materials are also carefully selected and designed to offer the best combination of protection, comfort, and durability. Much like the construction of gloves, where various polymers are layered for enhanced protection, the same thought process and approach is applied to suits. These materials can be advanced fabrics, such as microporous material and SMS. It’s important that the materials used are also compatible with different temperatures, from -40°C to 250°C, and offer additional features, such as ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, and anti-static properties.

Once materials used are certified, other protective accessories are designed to offer robust protection such as boots, overboots, hoods, oversleeves and more.
